If you’re lookin’ for a manly ride, it gets no manlier than the Dodge Ram. 2012, Dodge steps up the macho with bossy new sheetmetal and a more powerful Hemi V-8. But during a brief preview spin, we discovered that the Ram 1500 also has been tamed by heaps of refinement.

Underhood, improved breathing helps raise the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8’s output to 3?? horsepower (from 345) and 407 pound-feet of torque (from 3??). Thus equipped, it accelerates forcefully and pulls race or boat trailers easily. Meanwhile, cylinder deactivation allows the Hemi’s fuel economy to match that of the mid-level 310-hp, 4.7-liter V-8 and come within 10 percent of the base 215-hp, 3.7-liter V-6.

The Ram 1500 can seat between three and six people. Base Ram 1500s get manually-adjustable front bench seats with either vinyl or cloth upholstery, but top-of-the-line Laramie Longhorn models have luxurious leather-trimmed front bucket seats and heated second-row seats.

Reviewers praise the Ram’s front seats for being especially comfortable and supportive, and say that even the rear seat of the Quad Cab is spacious. However, test drivers note that the seats aren’t quite as nice as those up front.

Although you might think that its coil-sprung rear axle imparts commendable ride and handling at the expense of burliness, the Ram maintains great cargo and towing abilities. Three engine, cab, and bed choices are available, and the Ram’s styling remains brash and unmistakable.
