I Found this car at a gas station in 1988 in East Meadow, Long Island, NY. It had a gas tank in the trunk, no exhaust system and sheet metal riveted throughout - it was a mess. It also had a mechanics lean on it for about $300.
Now, you may be asking yourself. Hey, I know someone who had an MG like that. Well you may have known someone with an MGB but this is an MGC. Do you know that they only made the MGC in 1968 and 1969! This car is so rare that even our friends at CarDomain don’t know that it exists and I had to list it as an MGB (I sent them an email about that)(2010 UPDATE - CarDomain added an MGC category!!!!!).
The MGC is like an MGB in many regards except it has a 6 cylinder 145HP engine (vs. 95 hp 4 cyl for MGB) and a different front suspension - there are a few cosmetic differences as well (most notably, the hood). Bottom line, this 2,000 lb car has some serious horses under the hood and very long legs (you can do 90 all day and not get tired).
Look at this hunk of metal under the hood - straight 6; Dual SU carbs; 4 speed and electronic overdrive. Wow - what a thrill.
Here’s the inside view. All classic sport carwith Smith Gauges and leather seats. See the Speedo - it goes up to 140 mph - wishful thinking unless you’re going downhill, have the wind behind you and are quite insane - although 125 mph is reasonable ;-). Sitting in the driver’s seat is like wrapping yourself up in a steel cocoon. The steering wheel sits in your lap, your elbow rests on top of the transmission tunnel and your hand falls naturally onto to the shifter. The pedals seem like extensions to your feet and the shift throw is short and certain. This baby wants to go and offers a definite throaty yet understated vroom for all to hear when the gas pedal is applied. And that’s with the top up. Multiple by five if you put the top down!
So, if you see me going by on the highway (you’ll know it’s me by the big toothy grin on my face), give a nod and behold some fine British steel and a driver having the time of his life. They don’t make them this much fun anymore.
Thanks for looking. For more information about the MGC
